Variety in line widths.

I filled up my larger M size nib LAMY pen with the same Lexington Gray ink that I’ve been using in the EF nib. I’ve always avoided larger nibs in favor of super fine detail, but after some thought and observing a number of my older drawings, I decided to try out something a little […]

What I’m thankful for.

As we celebrate Thanksgiving here in the US, I’ve been considering what I’m thankful for as well. To be honest, I can’t pinpoint one particular thing. I am just generally thankful that God has been taking care of me this past year. It feels like the world is falling apart these days and I’ve been […]

New Pen and Ink Supplies

A friend gave me a $40 giftcard at Michael’s for my birthday, and I found a 40% off entire purchase coupon, which allowed me to get a lot for my money. I got a set of four sepia Micron pens, a set of three black Copic pens, some colored pencils and a pad of pen […]

Begonias

Some beautiful cascading begonias that we got about a month ago are just starting to fade, so we arranged some of the fallen blossoms in a bowl of water. I took the time to sketch them over the weekend while listening to cooking shows.

More recent sketches of brush and weeds.

Every page in this particular sketchbook is starting to look very similar. I hope to finish it by August if I continue at this rate, but soon I think I will change up my subject matter a little bit. You can see more sketches that I’ve posted at Sketching in Nature. Besides sketching, I have […]

June Plants in my Sketchbook.

From reviewing my sketchbook recently, my interests are apparent. I’ve noticed that I have a very distinctive style when sketching foliage and weeds. I am not trying to draw every last leaf, but I am drawn to the various shapes of the leaves. With this sketch of the pansies, I was working quickly using the […]

Sketches on my mind.

I have been making lots of sketches, although not all of them are worth showing anyone, and I am finding it easy to put off scanning and posting. I am still loving my new pens and my gray ink. I’ve started writing with my pens too, keeping written journals again. It’s a nice change. Reading […]

New Lamy Safaris

I recently bought two new fountain pens, Lamy Safaris in F (fine) and EF (extra fine) nibs (yellow and red). I have had a Lamy Al-Star with a medium nib for years, but I thought it was way too thick for drawing. I also got some converters, so I can use my own ink. Ever […]

My new morning sketching routine.

Recently I’ve rediscovered two small partially used sketchbooks and I’ve decided to make good use of them. I have since finished the first, and have now started on the second, a small moleskine journal I’ve had since 2005. I keep it in my car in the driver’s side door and I’ve been making small 10-15 […]

Individual Tree

Casey Klahn has recently started up a facebook painting challenge based on a photo that he posts. I have followed Casey’s blog for a number of years and I really appreciate his insight. I happened across his blog yesterday where he posted his latest photo, and I was really drawn to the image so I […]
