Yiayia’s Flowers #1, watercolor in 10 x 7 sketchbook, 5/17/09
As a child, my Yiayia (grandmother) was one of the biggest fans of my art. I remember one time we were sitting in a Friendly’s getting ice cream and I made a doodle on a napkin with a hot pink Crayola marker. Yiayia took that napkin home, wrapped it in plastic so it wouldn’t get ruined and kept it for years, showing to friends and guests. Unfortunately, she was sick for many years and never got to see any of my work when my skills began to improve.
Last Sunday I painted this from a photo of some of the flowers from my Yiayia’s funeral. I did it in a style and color choice that my Yiayia would have liked if she were here to see it. While the flowers were fresh I did some sketching, but I also took a ton of photos to use after the flowers died. I am planning on making some more floral watercolors or colored pencil pieces from these photos. This is in the last page of my watercolor sketchbook, which is the second watercolor book that I have finished ever and the third sketchbook I have finished this year. Another small achievement.
