Morning Sketches

I’ve started to keep a small sketchbook in my car so I can make sketches before work, and when I am out and about. I haven’t branched out into color yet though.

I love sketching in ink.

Sketching in ink has become my favorite method to practice in my sketchbook. It really forces me to be confident in my observations and marks. Here, I took a couple of minutes to sketch some lilies on the kitchen table.

Colored Pencil Exercises, Part 4

In my fourth and final colored pencil class we worked on portraits from a model. I only did this one other time in 2009 so I was really out of practice (to say the least). There were people in the class who had never drawn a portrait before (so I didn’t feel that self conscious). […]

Relay

I spent some time at the Franklin County Relay for Life this past weekend. I would have loved to do even more sketching, but there was so much going on that I couldn’t manage. My husband’s family gets really involved in the Relay every year, so I hope to sketch some more next year. Above […]

New Pen: Pelikan Techno-Liner

I tried out a new pen this morning, the Pelikan Techno-Liner. I used the 0.1 size, which is a nice super fine line. I only bought one pen because I wanted to test it out, but I think I will be buying more next time I buy art supplies. I think this will be a […]

Tree Leaves

I spent an afternoon with the trees, sketching on and off and getting interrupted many times. Sometimes I find it interesting to see how my impression compares to the actual scene. My drawing doesn’t look very much like the photo, but I think I will remember it pretty accurately years from now when I flip […]

Mini View

Last week I did not work on any “serious” art projects, although I did finish up something that I have wanted to do for a long time. I have wanted to make a one page mini zine for years now, probably since 2004 when I first saw one. For various reasons, I never got around […]

Fox Hill

I haven’t done anything in straight pen and ink for a long time so I decided to give it a try again. Pen and ink is a real challenge for me because I struggle with adding too much detail. I really love detail, but I can carry it too far at times. I don’t ever […]

European Stream

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about my personality and how I am nothing like the stereotypical “artist personality.” I took a Myers-Briggs test and I came back as ISTJ (introvert, sensing, thinking, judging). I am very serious and organized. I am ultra-dependable. I see things in black and white and I have a need […]

Lizzie

A portrait of my baby niece made as a gift for my sister. She and Cate are already friends even though they are so different in personality. Lizzie has the most dainty whimper of a cry but Cate has a powerful set of lungs and doesn’t hesitate to use them! I posted work in progress […]
