End of Summer

The CSA is almost over and now it’s getting colder. Every morning this week I have considered wearing a coat, but have decided against it. Soon, wearing a coat won’t be an option for me. Soon, I will also be turning on the heaters at night and digging out my down comforter. For three weeks now I have had hives, and swelling. When my hands swell, then it is awkward to hold a pen. When my feet swell, I have a hard time wearing shoes, and walking is tough. My prayer for the fall is that I return to good health.

New Workspace

After over a year of using my kitchen table as a desk, I have finally gotten my act together. Rather than go with a drafting table, I opted for a regular desk because I prefer to work on a flat surface and I wanted it to fit in with the look of the room. I went with the Patterson Desk from Crate and Barrel–it’s a nice size without being too big. I had a piece of glass cut to protect the top and now I don’t have to worry about coasters.

What really sold me on this desk was the huge space in the drawer that I can use to store a work in progress or my laptop. It’s perfect for keeping an important drawing away from Cate’s curious fingers.

I’m excited about this desk because I finally have a place of my own to work where I don’t have to pack up at a moment’s notice. Also, I am finally starting to decorate my space and feel comfortable where I am. I’m going for an uncluttered, cottage look. The next step is to paint the walls (light blue) and to make a painting to hang on the wall above my desk.

Zine!

A few weeks ago I did a relatively quick Sunday morning pen and ink drawing to be published in Destiny Zine #2, a zine with the theme of empowering girls and women. The drawing is inspired by a photo I took while visiting Lake Eden, VT about a month ago. I had the idea that this drawing was a study to prepare me for a larger colored pencil, or maybe watercolor. I really enjoy the theme of lakes, mountains and mist and you will definitely see more along these lines in the future.

You can learn more about the zine here. I am still waiting for my copy to come in the mail, but I know that it will be very intelligent and thoughtful. The proceeds are going to be donated to the Boston Rape Crisis Center.

Mini Still Life

I had a lot of fun painting this impromptu still life in my small moleskine watercolor journal, inspired by a harvest of peppers we received from the CSA. It’s similar to this watercolor sketch, also of veggies from the CSA.

It was exhilarating to paint quickly with no pencil sketch underneath–I need to do it more often.

Additional Evening Skies

Here are some more of my sunset sketches, drawn while sitting on my back deck. I’m glad I took the time and braved the mosquitoes to sketch them. They really capture a lot of memories from this past summer.
