20th Century American Drawings

When I was at the museum last week I also stopped by to see the exhibit of 20th Century American Drawings. There were a number of drawings in colored pencil, including one by Childe Hassam that I really liked. I was only vaguely familiar with this artist, but I think I am going to look […]

Happy Wednesday before Thanksgiving

The Wednesday before Thanksgiving has always been a special day for me. In earlier years, it was always a traveling day with the promise of a late night Thanksgiving dinner with many relatives. This year, we are starting a different tradition of having Thanksgiving with immediate family, so this Wednesday feels a bit different for […]

Slow Day

Yesterday was a sick day–Cate and I both have colds and I was feeling so weak and run down. We spent the day holed up in the house, taking it easy. I kept the TV off all day and just played the radio for Cate. I did do a small amount of watercolor sketching, but […]

End of Summer

The CSA is almost over and now it’s getting colder. Every morning this week I have considered wearing a coat, but have decided against it. Soon, wearing a coat won’t be an option for me. Soon, I will also be turning on the heaters at night and digging out my down comforter. For three weeks […]

Mini Still Life

I had a lot of fun painting this impromptu still life in my small moleskine watercolor journal, inspired by a harvest of peppers we received from the CSA. It’s similar to this watercolor sketch, also of veggies from the CSA. It was exhilarating to paint quickly with no pencil sketch underneath–I need to do it […]

Additional Evening Skies

Here are some more of my sunset sketches, drawn while sitting on my back deck. I’m glad I took the time and braved the mosquitoes to sketch them. They really capture a lot of memories from this past summer.

Evening Skies

I’ve been paying attention to skies lately. In New England, we don’t have big wide skies like in the West because of all the trees and buildings that block the view. Some of the only places to see a lot of sky are over a lake, or on top of a mountain. I once read […]

Blue Green Waters

Here is my latest painting in the blue/green color theme. This is the first time I have painted water as my main subject, and I have to say all the swirling reflections were a lot of fun to paint. I will definitely be painting this subject again in the future, and refining my technique.

Colored Pencil Exercises, Part 4

In my fourth and final colored pencil class we worked on portraits from a model. I only did this one other time in 2009 so I was really out of practice (to say the least). There were people in the class who had never drawn a portrait before (so I didn’t feel that self conscious). […]

Blue Green Leaves

A few weeks ago, I painted this abstract painting (thinking of leaves) on a blank watercolor card. I thought it was fitting to post, as I just showed you the blue and green abstract colored pencil drawing I made in my last post. I have also done another watercolor painting (more in my regular style) […]
